Small Business Owners Fall Into “The Ole Mirror Syndrome”
Small Business Owners Fall Into “The Ole Mirror Syndrome”
In the past few months, I’ve talked to so many business owners and the topic of getting new customers always seems to come up.
After a few minutes, I can usually see a big part of the problem.
They usually don’t realize that their own marketing in causing them to to LOSE potential customers. (and even MONEY)
Now, I know it’s not their fault. It’s what I like to call the “The Ole Mirror Syndrome”. It’s when you are looking at something the same way, through the same lens or mirror for so long, that’s it starts to look the same.
Just like with kids…parents don’t realize their growth, as much as others, because parents see them every day. I can just hear the relatives now…”Oh! You’ve Gotten So Big!”
(Cute and all when you’re younger…but when you get older, you don’t really like that one as much! lol)
So it comes down to the way we look at our own business and even our own website.
When we first get into business, we’re conditioned to think that we need business cards, a website, and maybe even a brochure to feel legit and credible. So, since we’re scrambling around thinking about so many different things, we get them any way we know how. When someone says, “I can do that for you” or I know someone that does that”…typically we’re so busy thinking about other things that we never really think this through…or even have the perspective to do so.
Web designers take a lot of pride in their work (as they should). Their goal is usually to build you a beautiful website that they can use in their portfolio. That’s all fine and dandy…but, web designers are typically not marketers, so if you want to get customers and make sales from your website, you need to THINK like a marketer.
A web designer usually doesn’t ask for what your goals are for your website. They’ll show you their sites and maybe even show other sites in your industry that they can make better. While this is nothing against web designers, the key is this…
What YOU, the business owner should be very clear on, is what the purpose of your website is…
Is it to build a relationship? share your expertise, opinion or experiences, (like a blog), or is it to make sales (like an e-commerce site)?
Many times, websites are sold as your “brochure online”. Having a brochure site is great, but with our fast paced interactive society and incredible technology at our finger tips, a brochure site falls “flat” when it comes to expecting sales.
It’s just not wired that way.
Having a crappy cup of coffee from your local diner and expecting it to be as rich and freshly ground as if the beans were just shipped in from Brazil that morning, is as opposite as you can get.
Business owners have been looking at this, only from 1 angle for so long, that they just don’t even see it, hence “The Ole Mirror Syndrome”.
You need get some new light and maybe it’s time for a new mirror.
So, I created a video that explains “The 3 Things You Need To Do To Make Money With Your Website”.

Ad Deconstruction – Lessons in Marketing
This is pretty cool…I belong to a few business networking groups on Facebook and in one of them, someone posted that they needed help with one of their ads. I was going to give my feedback there, but I thought that it would be easier to understand in a video. I also thought that more people would be able to learn from this, as well. I hope this helps. Let me know what you think by leaving a comment below and if you liked it, I hope you’ll pay it forward and share it with some of your friends that could benefit from it too! Thanks ~Joe
